Is Your Partner Secure or Avoidant?

Avoidant undersells this band. Emotional talk barely exists and gets deflected when raised. When you cry they get awkward and leave. No apology comes, and raising hurt returns the word sensitive. They see no need to tell anyone about you, and asking for help gets handle it yourself. Feel close and distance follows immediately. At this point it reads less like a relationship than like a state you're maintaining by yourself. If the longest task in your day is interpreting them alone, that's your answer. Relationships aren't supposed to be this hard. The point isn't to brand them a bad person. People carry different tolerances for closeness and this one's is extremely wide. What's worth calculating is how much you're getting out of continuing to fit yourself into that distance.
You deliberate at length about how to phrase things before speaking. Pile that up and eventually you stop speaking at all. Keeping a relationship by shrinking your own expression doesn't hold for long. If they don't know why you went quiet, that's a signal too.
Even daily updates don't get shared, so neither of you knows the other's routine. There's almost nothing you can plan together. That's why the relationship stays in the present and never advances. A relationship you can't picture a future in doesn't get easier with time.
Anything requiring a joint decision visibly stiffens them. Pushing joint spending or contracts through in this state raises the odds of a serious fight. Postpone large decisions until the conversational level of the relationship comes up.
